In Conversation with Hannah Buckle

Hannah Buckle is the talented designer behind our upcoming summer print, Solana. We sat down with Hannah to hear about her inspiration, the process behind Solana and her career as a freelance artist.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I'm a designer, wife and mum of two kids and a chocolate labrador. I’ve completed two design degrees and worked in the fashion industry for about 15 years. My house is exploding with print — from my wardrobe to homewares and linen — nothing is safe! I also have a big love of plants and flowers, especially tropical plants.

I’ve planted more than 20 palms in my garden so hopefully my neighbours like them too.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Botanical illustrations from the 1800s. I love how the subject is painted in great detail true to its characteristics, yet still reflects the artist's handiwork. There’s something timeless, elegant and effortless about this style of art.

How did you create the Solana print?

I sourced vintage references of botanical palms and bananas and then painted them in the same silhouette. Next was photographing each image and placing them into PhotoShop. Finally, I created textures, recoloured, deep etched and placed the design into a repeat pattern.

Available in 6 effortlessly feminine silhouettes perfect for that special occasion or casual wear.

What does a typical day look like for you?

My days can be long! I have two young kids, Mackenzie aged five and Finn almost three. Most of my week is spent as a textile designer for a fashion label, so we’re all up early for daycare and then off to work. I often start my freelance work in the evenings after the kids are in bed. When I can, I prefer to paint in the daytime somewhere in my garden. Days off almost always include the beach, sometimes a trip to the markets for flowers and spending time with friends and family.

Do you have a favourite place or time of day that you like to create?

I design best at night when the pressure is off and the world is quiet. However, some of my best ideas form during the day sitting outside. I love to do my research while listening to music on my front deck or under a tree.
